The Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle on Wednesday said lawlessness at Bellville Taxi rank will not be tolerated.

This follows several days of lawless behaviour and threats of violence.

MEC Carlisle has met with officials from the SAPS, City of Cape Town’s Metro Police, as well as Provincial officials, to decide on urgent and necessary measures to be taken to curb the increasingly lawless situation at the rank.

Ministerial Spokesperson Sipheshile Dube said criminal charges have been laid by all people concerned.

Dube said three taxi associations are involved in this violence and threats, the Durbanbille Taxi Association, Bloekombos Taxi Association and Bellville Taxi Associaton.

He added that the law enforcement will increase their operations in the area to counter any acts of violence and threats.
