Minister of Correctional Services Sibusiso Ndebele on Monday condemned the attack on Clive Derby-Lewis.

The department says Lewis was stabbed with a piece of glass at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. Lewsi is serving a life sentence for murdering South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani back in 1993.

Ndebele said from now on Derby-Lewis' personal safety will be prioritized.

Ministerial Spokesperson Logan Maistry said the department will make sure that all vulnerable prisoners are placed in a manner where they can always be protected.

Maistry said Derby-Lewis will be placed in a single prison cell where a repeat of this will never happen.
