80 percent of schools have opened their doors today and ready for the school year to begin.
The Western Cape Education Department has estimated that almost one million learners will be returning to the classroom this week.
Schools were given the option of opening school today rather than open on Wednesday, in order to close for two days during the long weekend in April.
Education spokesperson Paddy Atwell said “almost all schools completed their preparations for the 2011 school year at the end of last year.”
Education MEC Donald Grant visited the Golden Groove Primary in Claremont to observe the first day of school in 2011.
No problems have been reported so far.
