ICT Indaba officially opened

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe officially opened the Information Communication Technology Indaba in Cape Town today.

In his speech Deputy President Motlanthe said hosting of the ICT Indaba on the African continent is a valuable platform upon which African countries and other developing nations can accelerate socio-economic development.

Motlanthe added that 55 percent of Africans live in rural areas.  He urged delegates at the ICT to take responsibility and ensure that they are integrated into the knowledge base society.

The Deputy President also mentioned that Africa needs a regulatory framework that is strong and credible to facilitate cost reduction, need adequate funding to ensure universal access to broadband, and have appropriate skilled people to drive the knowledge based economy.   

Motlanthe said we need to increase investment in broadband infrastructure in order to achieve growth in the information and communications technology.
