Students at the College of Cape Town on Thursday protested outside the Western Cape Department of Education.

It was reported that the students were protesting against the current transport grant system.

A case of malicious damage to property was reported, and no arrests were made.

Provincial Department of Education Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said according to national guidelines on bursaries at FET colleges, colleges can pay up to R6 000 for transport depending of transport needs; and the balance available after meeting other costs.

“The protesters believe they are entitled to pay outs of R6 000 regardless of their transport needs and fee obligations; students protested on the same issue last year” Attwell added.

Attwell also stated that the college management is discussing the issues concerned with student representatives.
