The Department of Correctional Services on Tuesday said it is working hard to come with solutions to overcrowding in South Africa’s prisons.

Correctional Services ministerial spokesperson Logan Maistry says advances have been made to tackle the problem.

Maistry said every month about 23 000 inmates exit correctional facilities; while around 25 000 inmates are admitted.

“It costs the tax payer approximately R8 000 per month for every inmate” Maistry added.

Maistry also said that Minister Sbusiso Ndebele hosted a colloquium in November 2012 to address the issue of overcrowding and alternative sentencing.
