Labour department received 918 applications for farmers requesting to employ foreign workforce

Department of Labour has confirmed that farmers in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Western Cape have applied to employ foreign workers. 

This follows the introduction of a new minimum wage in the sector.  The department received 918 applications from farmers who asked for exemption from the new R105 a day minimum wage.

Department Spokesperson Page Boikanyo said the applications and the number of people who would be affected are 74 603 workers.

“Currently, the department continues to capture applications received from the various applicants and at the same time requesting outstanding information from farmers who have not yet submitted the necessary documentation” Boikanyo added.

Boikanyo said department is giving provisional approval to farmers to ensure that they keep their minimum wage thatr was given earlier in the year.
