The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa has strongly condemned the latest incident of alleged police brutality in Lomanyaneng, North West and labelled it as an embarrassment to the South African Police Service.

Ministry Spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said the Minister has welcomed the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s arrest of the suspect as well as the SAPS North West provincial management’s swift action in suspending the suspect, pending the case being heard through the criminal justice system.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of police Dianne Kholer Barnard said she will be writing to the Acting Chairperson of the portfolio committee on police to ask that Minister Nathi Mthethwa and the National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega come before the committee to provide them with a concrete action plan to deal with systemic police brutality.

Kholer Barnard added that this is embarrassing and unacceptable for the police to continue with this brutality and as the DA they are calling for Commission of Inquiry on the police brutality.
