Torching of trains in Gauteng strongly condemned

The Railway Safety Regulator condemns the spate on torching of trains as irresponsible and unjustified.

This comes after three train carriages were set alight at the Mlamla-nkunzi railway station in Orlando East, Soweto, on Wednesday night.
Johannesburg Emergency Services Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said it is a deliberate fire, it was not by accident.

Mulaudzi said the carriages were torched while the train was in motion.

Railway Safety Regulator Communications Manager Babalwa Mpendu said the recent incidents of torching of trains have disrupted train operations and infringes on the commuters safety.

Mpendu further said this seeks to discredit the efforts and investment made by government on rail to position rail as the preferred mode of transport.
