Three fires over the weekend have left 128 people homeless. In Elsies River a blaze destroyed one wood and backyard dwelling at the rear of the formal house on enclosed grounds.

Five occupants residing in the backyard dwelling were left homeless.

It is suspected that children entered the backyard dwelling without permission that started the fire.

A second fire was reported in the Blackheath area in the early hours of yesterday morning where 7 shacks were destroyed  leaving 23 people displaced.

Another fire was reported in  Athlone near the Vygieskraal Stadium, 20 shacks were destroyed.

Disater risk management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Response team was at the scenes to assist all the fire victims across the Cape Peninsula.

“We urge residents to exercise caution, in particular not for children to play with fire or matches; not to leave open flames, candles unattended or burning” Solomons-Johannes added.

Solomons-Johannes also said that people should isolate appliances or divices connected to power sources.
