The Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Police Dianne Kholer-Barnard said a massive backlog in the analysis of rape and sexual assault DNA is building up as a R75-million machine lies idle at the South African Police Service forensic laboratory in Pretoria.

Kholer-Bernard said the South African Police Service has once again failed to order key forensic items for sample analysis.

She adds that the DA has been informed that the Genetic Sample Processing System at the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory is gathering dust because they have run out of the necessary consumables to use it.

These consumables are, for example, various kits, such as DNA primer kits, as well as sample holders and chemicals.

Barnard added that once again the current National Police Commission Riah Piyega, who was brought in on her position as the management expert must answer the DA questions as to why key resources are being used or ordered.

She further said this is the only system in the world and it can process about 1200 samples per week, compared to semi-automatic machine which processes only 400 samples per week.
