The City of Cape Town Metro Police on Thursday embarked on a smash and grab awareness campaign along Vanguard Drive.

City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the campaign is critical to alleviate crime and to also create a Safe City.

It has been reported that between July 2012 and June 2013, 68 smash and grab incidents were reported on Vanguard Drive and 16 arrests were made during the same period.

Smith said the best efforts of the SAPS and Metro Police have not been able to deal with the smash and grab hotspots on Vanguard Drive, the escape routes is the informal settlements nearby.

Smith added that this campaign aims to allow the public to protect themselves because these suspects are targeting women, in doing so the public should not leave their valuable items lying around, things like laptops, handbags and phones.
