The Higher Education Transformation Network has thrown its support behind the call by University of Cape Town students for the removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes.

This is after student Chumani Maxwele threw faeces over the base of the statue.

HETN Spokesperson Hendrick Makaneta said there are deep seated problems at UCT which require immediate attention.

Makaneta has said they believe that this is long overdue and we cannot have such colonialist statues in our companies which remind us of the painful past.

Makaneta has said the HETN believes that the time has come for the UCT to undergo serious transformation.

Makaneta has said they have made a call in the past regarding the manner in which the university is unwilling to transform, particularly around black academics as well.
