The City of Cape Town’s Social
Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate took to the streets to
raise awareness about indiscriminate donations to street people on Friday.
This campaign is known as Give
Responsibly. Councilors and officials from the Directorate were stationed at 17
major intersections throughout the city.
Mayoral Committee Member for
Social Development and Early Childhood Development Councillor Suzette Little said
they opted for this activation to create awareness about the fact that street
corner handouts are doing little else other than perpetuating the cycle of
dependence and keeping people on the streets.
“The public has a shared
responsibility for the well-being of street people. We must understand that
there is a very good chance that the R2 or R5 handed over at the intersection
is feeding a habit instead of the individual,” Little added.
