Violent student protests spread across the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

The Department of Higher Education and Training has since called for police intervention.

Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Higher Education and Training Professor Belinda Bozzoli says this will only treat the symptoms of the problem.

Bozzoli claims that the protests are result of universities receiving less funding.
