All key routes in Johannesburg are being monitored this morning by the Metro Police as the first day of the school year begins.
Metro Police Wayne Minnaar says public vehicles transporting children will be checked for roadworthiness.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said “We are indeed ready to begin the 2011 school year. We enter this New Year with renewed vigour and excitement, after the encouraging results achieved by the class of 2010”.
Schools in Mamelodi and Tembisa will be visited this morning by Basic Education minister, Angie Motshekga and her deputy minister Enver Surty.
Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe and Gauteng premier, Nomvula Mokonyane will be visiting a school in Soweto.
