Police in Gauteng are investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrests of two Soweto journalists Penwell Dlamini and Antonio Muchawe, by the Hillbrow police.
The two Soweto journalists were doing a story about the police’s alleged refusal to assist nine families wrongfully evicted from their homes.
They were arrested for about an hour before being released, and they had their equipment confiscated.
Police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said, “It is not our intention to confiscate equipment for journalists that is why we need to find out exactly what happened there. From both sides, the journalists and our members, in order to be able to say what exactly went wrong there.”
The Democratic Alliance is calling on the Independent Complaints Directorate to investigate.
