The South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (Sadsaw) on Monday said that there is an increasing in the number of recently retrenched women that are joining the sector to support their families.
Union officials said added that dismissed factory workers and frustrated school leavers, who failed to find work, were opting to work as domestic workers.
Sadsaw's Myrtle Witbooi also said that they noticed an increase in the number of queries from domestic workers who want to know more about their rights.
Witbooi further said some of them come to the union for advice.
