The excise
duties on tobacco products are determined in accordance with a targeted total
tax burden of 52% of the retail price.
An increase of between 5 and 8% are
proposed.
The changes in specific excise duties are as follows: Malt beer’s
current excise duty rate is R53, 97 per litre, the proposed excise rate of R59,
36 per litre.
Traditional African beer was R7, 82 per litre and will remain the
same.
Traditional African beer powder was R34, 70 per kilogram and will remain
the same.
Unfortified wine was R2, 32 per litre and will increase to R2, 50 per
litre.
Fortified wine was R4, 33 per litre and will increase to R4, 59 per
litre.
Sparkling wine was R6, 97 per litre and will increase to R7, 53 per
litre.
Ciders and alcoholic fruit was R2, 71 per litre and will increase to R2,
97 per litre.
Spirits was R93, 03 per litre and will increase to R111, 64 per
litre.
Cigarettes were R9, 74 per 20 cigarettes and will increase to R10, 32
per 20 cigarettes.
Cigarette tobacco was R10, 53 per 50 grams and will increase
to R11, 05 per 50 grams.
Pipe tobacco was R2, 98 for 25 grams and will increase
to R3, 22 for 25 grams.
Cigars were R50, 52 per 23 grams and will increase to
R53, 05 per 23 grams.
