It has emerged that about 30% of grade nine learners in the Western Cape drop out of high school.
This is according to the provinces MEC for Community Safety Dan Plato.
Plato has urged parents to report children to the police who drop out of school to sell drugs or join a gang.
An education expert Graeme Bloch said learners who drop out of school are tempted by gangsterism and prospects of making money.
He added that areas in Cape Town like Khayelitsha and Gugulethu have seen an increase of gangsterism among school children.
