The Western Cape government says they cannot provide basic services to residents of Siyhlala informal settlement near Phillipi.

Government claims that the land is privately owned.

On Monday residents protested and damaged streetlights and burnt tyres.

National government has reportedly begun a process to buy the land from the owner. The municipality’s Ernest Sonnenberg says government is in court with the owner of the land.

Sonnenberg added that this is slowing down the process.
