A robber was killed in a police shootout at a KFC outlet in Mthatha.

It is alleged that four men entered a KFC outlet on Owens Road, in the Mthatha CBD, on Wednesday night, and remained in the shop until very late.

The suspects waited until it was after 10pm and then they all pulled out firearms and demanded money from the staff and took an undisclosed amount of money.

Police were alerted about the robbery and arrived when the robbers were about to flee.

Police Spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela said when police arrived a shootout ensued and one suspect was shot dead, another one wounded, including a police officer.

Fatyela said one suspect has been arrested but two more are still at large.

He added that the money that had been taken by the suspects was recovered.
