The Western Cape Department of Education has raised concern about the high failure rate in Grade 9.

The department said only 13.9 percent of pupils tested passed the mathematics test in 2012, and 48.2 percent passed the language test in Grade 9.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said this failure in grade 9 affects the grade 12 a lot and hence they decided on a turn around strategy.

Casey said this turn around plan includes monitoring schools and learners that need extra support and guidance.

She added that they target to assist each learner for each subject to ensure that this situation is completely turned around.
