The South African Health Department has launched the National Health PhD Scholars Programme.

The aim of the programme is to encourage the growth in the number of medical researchers in South Africa.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said one of the key impediments that have constrained healthcare providers is the decline in the health research workforce, which has exacerbated the burden of clinical teaching and health service delivery.

Motsoaledi said the Department will donate R5 million another R10 million came from 23 private sector companies in November 2011 and government put together to launch the Public Health fund where R40 million was put aside and divided into three.

“One amount was to boost the number of medical students who would normally not be admitted to our universities because they are from poor back grounds, sponsoring them for R200 000 each” Motsoaledi added.

23 students have been granted for this year, and are persuing research in different spheres from genetic analysis to maternal mental health.
