MEC Plato: Youth programs need to be strengthened

The MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said youth development programs need to be strengthened in communities.

MEC Plato was speaking at a Youth Safety Summit in Bredasdorp in the Overberg on Tuesday.  This follows the brutal murder of 17-year-old Anene Booysen last month.

The Youth Summit is part of the provincial government’s whole society approach towards improving safety in the province.

Ministerial Spokesperson Greg Wagner said MEC Plato announced several initiatives that would be benefiting the youth in Bredasdorp.  Among them would be the partnership between religious communities that saw more than R1 million being handed out for youth development programmes during the December holidays.

Wagner added that this partnership would now go over to the Easter holiday where the religious communities can apply for funding for youth development programmes, to keep the youth occupied during the school holiday period.
