Kraafontein teacher arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old

A 39-year-old teacher from a local primary school in Kraaifontein has been arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old learner multiple times. 

Captain FC van Wyk said according to initial investigation the victim was picked up by the suspect on six different occasions over a period of several months, while the victim was on her way home from school. 

The suspect allegedly took her to his house and raped her.  The teacher is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate Court today on a charge of rape. 

Van Wyk said the suspect was arrested after the 12 year-old reported the incident at Kraaifontein Police.

“It is not clear why the victim did not come forward earlier, Kraaifontein police detective will also investigate if there were more victims.

The victim is currently receiving counseling from the victim’s support unit. Crimes against innocent woman and children remains a high priority for the South African Police services and perpetrator’s of sexual exploitation will be dealt with harshly,” Van Wyk added

Meanwhile the Western Cape Department of Education Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said the matter was not reported to the WCED however they are shocked at the allegations against the teacher. 

Attwell added that a district officer will be contacting the police today to try and obtain further details so we can begin with our own investigation as a matter of urgency.
