The Gauteng Health Department said on Wednesday that the number of babies abandoned in Gauteng hospitals is decreasing.

Department spokesperson Simon Zwane said there are currently 11 babies in different hospitals in the province waiting to be claimed and in 2012 there were only 16 babies abandoned in the Tshwane health district.

"We have embarked on education campaign to educate them about abortion and foster parenting options that are available to them if they ever unwanted pregnancies,” Zwane said

He concluded by saying in the past the number of children that were born and abandoned are mostly HIV positive with the strength of HIV programmes more children are born without HIV.
