A fire occurred at the Lotus Park Informal Settlement close to the Nyanga Railway Station in Gugulethu.

Disaster Risk Management Risk Centre Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said upon arrival of emergency crews it was found that the fire was already extinguished by residence and the fire brigade damped down the remnants thereof.

Solomons-Johannes said the fire destroyed one shack leaving four people displaced. The damage is estimated to the value of R15,000.  It is suspected that the fire was caused by a lighted candle that ignited bedding.

In another incident a fire destroyed five structures in Phumlani Drive in Nyanga, resulting in the displacement of fifteen people.

Solomons-Johannes said the damage is estimated to the value of R275,000. It is suspected that the fire was cause due to smoking in bed igniting bedding.

He added that the City’s disaster response teams assisted the victims with food parcels, clothing, blankets, baby packs and building material.
