The City of Cape Town is joining forces with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to provide carers and traditional surgeons from Khayelitsha with vital information about making initiation rituals safer and environmentally friendly.

The training will be on Thursday and Friday and fifteen participants are expected to participate in a first aid training course.

Ministerial Spokesperson Daniel Johnson said the training is aimed at not protecting this very important cultural practice but also ensuring the safety of the initiates is not compromised.

“The training will focus on health and hygiene, fire control and sustainable use of an environment.” Johnson added

The Western Cape government is committed to making sure the upcoming initiation season is indeed a safe one for the many boys who will be undertaking this very important right of passage.
