The City of Cape Town has called upon Philippi residents to assist the City’s effort to curb the ongoing vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure in the Philippi farming area.

Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg said Cape Town is spending on average R800,000 each month to secure, repair and replace stolen infrastructure in Schaapkraal.

Councillor Sonnenberg said technicians are called out to the area on a near daily basis

“Very often, as soon as repairs are completed, vandals simply throw chains over the overhead conductors and transformers, tripping the electricity supply once more. We have it on good authority that many of the saboteurs are from the Egoli informal settlement in the area, having declared that as long as they do not have electricity supply, they will continue to disrupt supply to surrounding areas.” Sonnenberg added.
