The Congress of South African Trade Unions has called for the stop of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

This destructive practice is known to cause foetal alcohol syndrome.

Furthermore, Cosatu called for the prosecution of farmers involved in the notorious dop system, which has been linked to higher rates of alcohol foetal syndrome.

Cosatu's Tony Ehrenreich reported that there should be an inquiry into farms and farmers who implemented the dop system and thus getting people addicted to alcohol.

This enquiry should lead to the imprisonment of farmers and their farms sold to fund the compensation to the affected families Ehrenreich emphasised.
