About 82-thousand-553 out of the 532-thousand-988 full-time candidates who participated in the 2010 matric exams were repeaters, while 27-thousand-721 did not attempt to write at all.

According to media reports a new unit tasked who will be monitoring the performance of the country's schools will be conducting investigations at 100 schools that had performed very badly this week.

In addition, principals of dysfunctional schools face sanctions, including transfers, if it is found the school's poor performance can be attributed to bad leadership.

While, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga was reluctant to predict the national pass rate, she however said they keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best.
