The Home Affairs Department issued Serbian fugitive Dobrosav Gavric with a permit to reside in South Africa until the case against him is finalised.
Last year he was arrested after Serbian officials issued an extradition request for him.
He was convicted of a triple murder in his home town and sentenced to 35 years in absentia.
Judgment in his bail application is expected on Friday.
It is believed Gavric was with underworld boss Cyril Beeka when he was shot dead in Cape Town last year.
