The Johannesburg Emergency Services have urged families with swimming pools to cover them and take their children to swimming lessons.

This comes after a four-year-old boy drowned at his home in Horizon View, Roodepoort on Saturday.

Emergency Services officials say the boy was playing near the pool when he fell in.

The mother heard his screams and jumped in to try and save him, but she could also not swim.

Emergency personnel added that the pair was eventually assisted by a neighbour  but only the mother was resuscitated.
