The Western Cape’s fauna and flora are in danger because of high prices offered in foreign markets for rare species bought for Chinese medicine, to keep as pets or for decorative ornaments.

Rare species of spiders, lizards and turtles as well as parts of sharks are exported through South African ports.

Paul Gildenhuys Programme Manager of the biodiversity crime unit at Cape Nature said that they are working towards a solution to this kind of poaching.

Gildenhuys added that they are working together with the Hawks, the Police and Customs.
