The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation yesterday, held an award ceremony at the District Six Museum.

The IJR’s Reconciliation Award for 2011was handed to 54 year-old Olga Macingwane, by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Macingwane was one of the victims of a bomb blast that killed four people and injured 67 in Worcester in 1996.

She forgave Stephanus Coetzee, the man responsible for the deadly blast when they met in 2009 in Pretoria.

"When I met Stephanus, I didn’t see a monster; I saw a child of God” Macingwane said at the ceremony.

Archbishop Tutu said it was this form of attitude that would lead South Africa to bigger and better heights.

“Every saint has a past, and every sinner has future” Tutu added.

The awards happen every year since the year 2000, and the nomination criteria are for individuals or institutions who make a difference and contribute towards nation building.
