The Democratic Alliance said if Jackie
Selebi has indeed made a recovery from his illness or not been adhering to all
his parole conditions, the decision to release him could potentially be
reviewed.
This comes after media reports today
revealed that Selebi was seen shopping around Pretoria on
Sunday.
Chief deputy commissioner at
Correctional Services, Teboho Mokoena, says media reports have misled people
into thinking Selebi violated his parole conditions.
Selebi, who was sentenced to 15
years imprisonment on charges of corruption, was released on medical parole
last year.
DA MP of Correctional Services James
Selfe said the DA regards this as a serious matter, more particularly given the
public’s Sinicism that surrounds the release on medical parole of Schabir Shaik
a couple of years ago. The DA will be taking the matter to Parliament and
asking some critical questions, whether Mr Selebi has recovered or not.
