The National Union of Mineworkers has today confirmed that its regional Chairperson was shot dead last night at the Western Platinum Mine, which is a mine owned by Lonmin in Marikana.

It is believed that he was on his way to visit his girlfriend when he was ambushed.

NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the union has been targeted as tensions in the area increase.

Seshoka said another colleague was also shot on the leg and is in the hospital in a critical condition but stable.

“The police are still investigating the cause of his death and the motive for the murder” Seshoka added.
