A fire occurred at the Rasta Kamp Informal Settlement off Strandloper Crescent between Somerset West and Strand this morning.

The fire destroyed eight structures leaving thirty two people displaced.

Disaster Risk Management Centre Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said two people were seriously injured in the fire.

Solomons-Johannes said the damages are estimated to the value of R200,000.  It is suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical fault resulting in sparks short circuiting wiring igniting insulation.

In another incident the authorities were alerted regarding a fire in progress at the Olieboom Informal Settlement, off Olieboom Road in Schaapkraal.

Solomons-Johannes said upon arrival of firefighters it was found that the shack was engulfed in flames.  The fire destroyed one shack and claimed the life of Annelise Holmes that was the only occupant.

He added that the damages are estimated to the value of R90,000.
