The Western Cape Education Department today said the number of non-fee schools will increase in 2014.

Western Cape MEC of Education Donald Grant said the reality is that we are living in tough economic times and in this kind of climate, many parents simply cannot afford to pay their school fees.

Grant said the WCED has increased the norms and standards funding for many of fee-paying schools beyond the amounts prescribed in the Norms and Standards.

Ministerial Spokesperson, Bronagh Casey said that essentially, this means that parents who turned to schools accommodating nearly 170 000 learners could opt for their schools to become non-fee schools, and will therefore not pay school fees.
