During the Standing Committee on Appropriations yesterday, the Director General of the Department of Planning, Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Dr Tsakani Ngomane, revealed that the total debt owed to municipalities is currently at R100bn, much of which is considered to be irrecoverable.

Democratic Alliance spokesperson on Appropriations Malcolm Figg said, “Local government is at the coalface of service delivery and thus the financial well being of municipalities is critical to the delivery of basic services such as clean water, electricity, sanitation and waste removal.

“The Democratic Alliance will ask the Minister to address the concerning fact that most of the R100bn is irrecoverable.” Figg added.
