The head of United Nations
Women has praised South Africa’s strong legislation to protect and empower
women but lamented its weak implementation.
Ahead of international women’s
day today, Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka called for countries to shift from a
business as usual approach so that Goal five of the Sustainable Development
Goals on gender equality and women’s empowerment can be achieved by the 2030
deadline.
She also weighed in on the
importance of the race for the next Secretary General and the Presidency of the
United States.
Mlambo-Ngcuka is calling on
countries to keep their eye on the ball and urging for effective implementation
of existing legislation that delivers measurable impacts.
