Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has requested an extension to the deadline that the Hawks set for him, to answer questions on his role in setting up a suspected spy unit at the South African Revenue Service.

That's according to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko who held a media briefing on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

Wednesday was the deadline for Gordhan to respond to the 27 questions from the Hawks, relating to their investigation into the so- called rogue spy unit which allegedly was set- up at SARS in mid 2000s, while Gordhan was SARS Commissioner.

Gordhan has meanwhile written a letter to the Hawks- through his lawyers- demanding answers on whether they are investigating him for any offence and on what grounds.
