A blind resident of Grassy Park, John van Schalkwyk, was injured and needed stitches after falling into an open manhole of the City of Cape Town in Lotus River.

The League of the Friends of the Blind ( LOFOB) says it has asked the city to “ensure that all drains and manhole covers on sidewalks are covered”.

The Organisation added that they have requested vigilance with regard to the safety of blind people in the city, especially in Grassy Park, where a major institution for the blind is located.

According to Charles Cooper, spokesperson for the city, they were not aware of the incident that took place.

He said the problem was caused by people who steal the metal covers and sell them for scrap.

“ We urge the public to report any open manholes or drains to the call centre of the city, and where it is,” said Cooper.
