47 Masiphumelele residents were arrested last night for an illegal gathering. Angry residents were expressing their frustration with a new housing development that would force them to leave the area.
Tensions reached an all time high last night as protesters took to the streets armed with knobkierries and sticks in defiance of the new project.
According to Superintendant Charles Trout, the residents also burned tyres and blocked roads in the area ; obstructing access to motorists and other residents arriving home from work.
Police and Neighbourhood Watch members tried to disperse the mob, but their efforts fuelled the unrest.
The residents who were arrested, appeared in the Simons Town Magistrate court this morning.
