ANC to appoint researchers to investigate the viability of nationalising the country’s mines

The African National Congress will reportedly appoint two independent researchers to investigate the viability of nationalising the country’s mines.

The ruling party wants mining companies to help fund the researchers’ work.

Calls for the seizure of mines have been led by the ANC Youth League, which says the country’s mineral wealth needs to be more widely shared.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe’s remarks in Johannesburg today after a meeting of the national executive committee were interpreted by obsevers as an indication that the state wants a role in mining.
