The City of Cape Town revealed that it is investigating a claim made by a union that senior traffic officials are implicated in a scam involving cancellation of fines.
The South African Municipal Workers' Union reported this week that it had given the City a file detailing allegations of a corrupt relationship between officers and companies such as car hire firms that ran a number of vehicles.
The union said it had been told many warrants of arrest for traffic offences were never carried out, and numerous fines were reduced or withdrawn.
The union says the information it has in its possession connects well-known vehicle hire and fleet companies allegedly involved in corrupt activities.
Allegations that some officers were bribed with free cars in return for the favours are also being looked into.
