Police Minister calls for a review in police practices

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has called SAPS management to review and strengthen the command and control practice across the department; from police stations, clusters, provincial and national levels.

The number of civil claims dealt with by SAPS was 7 004 in 2009/2010, in 2010/2011 the number was significantly reduced to 3 007 and during the 2011/2012 the number increased to 5 090.

Ministerial Spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said that Minister Mthethwa today reiterated and urged the police management to ensure that they tighten, command and control across all levels of police, from police stations, clusters, provincial including national levels because it cannot be ok for police officials to be in court, defending themselves instead of chasing the criminals.

Mnisi added that the department believes that part of the challenge is the lack of command and control, that is why they want to ensure that when plans are in place to intensify at that level they will be able to reduce significantly some of the law suites against the state.
