Equal Education is demanding
that Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga provide answers on the leaked
National Education Evaluation and Development Unit.
EE has also expressed its
concern that the report was not made public in 2013.
The report has found that
primary schools are failing to equip learners with basic literacy and numeracy
skills.
EE Deputy General Secretary
Doron Isaacs said this report shows that children in primary schools and rural
areas are reading at levels far behind where they supposed to and raises some
of the real problems that underlie the poor reading ability in rural children.
Isaacs said it is very
concerning what the report contains and equally concerning that Minister Motshekga suppressed it for so long.
“As Equal Education we want
the minister to explain why she did this.” Isaac added.
