Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato has called immediate action into the gang epidemic in the province.

In a statement MEC Plato said Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko has not made any decision on bringing back the Specialised Drug and Gang Units, a month after he made a commitment that he will consider it.

MEC Plato added that we should be seeing a far more urgent approach to tackling the Cape gang epidemic.

Ministerial Spokesperson Ewald Botha said Minister Nhleko publically announced to consider bringing back the Specialised Drug and Gang Units a month ago and specifically to reinstate the units without hesitation and there was a process stating him to share the details behind the plans to train the units how to capacitate them, where and when they will be deployed.

“People of the Western Cape want to know why it has taken more than four years of campaigning and a loss of countless lives before the national government has considered the introduction of these much needed specialised units.” Botha concluded.
